Online bookings now open for winter vaccinations to protect those most vulnerable
Thousands of people across the North East and North Cumbria can now book their free winter vaccinations as the NHS urges those most at risk to protect themselves from serious illness.

People who are eligible will receive invitations by letter, text or email reminding them to come forward for their flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, but do not need to wait for an invitation before booking.
Anyone eligible can book now at participating GP practices, through the NHS App, by calling 119 or online. From 1 October, appointments can also be booked at community pharmacies.
Those eligible include:
- adults aged 65 and over (flu)
- children aged 2-3 years (flu nasal spray)
- adults aged 75 and over (COVID-19 and flu)
- people living in older adult care homes (COVID-19 and flu)
- people aged 18 months to 64 years with long-term health conditions (flu)
- people aged 6 months and over who are immunosuppressed (COVID-19)
- close contacts of people with weakened immune systems (flu)

- frontline health and social care staff (flu)
Ben Anderson, director of population health, NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB), said: “Flu and COVID-19 can cause serious illness, particularly for people who are more vulnerable, and vaccination remains one of the best ways to protect yourself.
"These viruses can spread more easily during the colder months and often peak in December and January. Getting vaccinated from October gives the body time to build up protection before winter.
Flu vaccinations will be available from 1 September for pregnant women, who can receive their vaccine at their GP practice or as part of a routine antenatal appointment.
Children aged two and three can get a free flu nasal spray at their GP practice, while school pupils from reception to year 11 will be offered their vaccination through their school immunisation team.
Mr Anderson added: "Some people may not realise they are at greater risk or that they are eligible for a free vaccine. If you are unsure, speak to your GP or midwife, or check the NHS website.
"Getting vaccinated is one of the best ways to protect yourself from becoming seriously ill this winter. If you are eligible, please take up the offer and get protected as soon as you can."
