Retired farmer urges over-75s to take up spring Covid booster offer

A retired North East farmer has spoken out in support of the spring Covid-19 vaccination programme, urging those eligible to come forward without delay.

John McBryde, 81, of Northumberland, is among more than 91,500 people, across the region, who have already received their spring booster.

He said getting vaccinated had given him renewed confidence to continue his day-to-day activities.

“I still play golf, watch a lot of live sport and enjoy travel, often visiting places where there are lots of people, so I feel much more confident knowing that I have had my booster,” he said.

Mr McBryde, who has asthma, said protecting his health had been a priority.

“I made an appointment at my local pharmacy, and it only took five minutes to get the vaccine. I’d encourage everyone who is eligible, especially older people, to get theirs as soon as possible.”

Thousands of appointments are available at GP surgeries and community pharmacies across the North East and North Cumbria for those aged 75 and over, care home residents, and people with weakened immune systems.

Eligible patients will be invited by the NHS but can also book without waiting, via the NHS App, online, or by calling 119.

Ben Anderson, director of population health, NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB), said early uptake across the region had been encouraging.

“It’s great news that more than 91,500 people have already had their Covid-19 booster within the first two weeks of the spring vaccination programme, with a further 48,800 bookings made,” he said.

“There are still plenty of appointments available and we would advise anyone who hasn’t yet received their vaccine to get it as soon as they can, as protection can take around two weeks to build, so booking early is best.

“Protection from earlier vaccinations can weaken over time and virus strains can change. If you’re over 75 or have a weakened immune system, staying up to date with your vaccinations helps reduce the risk of serious illness or hospital admission.”

The spring booster vaccination programme will close on June 30.

Mr Anderson added: “It’s important to remember that Covid-19 has not gone away. Even as we move into the warmer months, it can still pose a serious risk.”
